  • Arthritis is a general term used for conditions that cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and other joint symptoms. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis. In joints with OA, the protective cartilage between bones starts to wear away. This allows the bones to rub together, which can cause pain and stiffness.

    What causes arthritis?

Your arthritis is caused by a combination of risk factors that are unique to you. Some of them–age, genetics, previous injuries, and overuse of certain joints–are things you can’t really do anything about.

But you can change other factors–like weak joint muscles, lack of exercise, and continued joint wear and tear due to excess weight.

    Common Signs of Arthritis

    • Morning Stiffness lasting 30 minutes or less
    • Joint pain or tenderness that is constant or that comes and goes
    • Not being able to move a joint in the normal way
    • Weakness and joint pain that can’t be explained

This is not a complete list of all possible symptoms.

Only your doctor can diagnose whether what you have is arthritis.

Exercise May Help

  • Experts Recommend 3 Types of Exercises for Arthritis

  • Warm-ups and Cool-downs for Arthritis Relief

    • Warming up before activity and cooling down afterwards helps minimize injury when preventing arthritis with exercise.
    • Always warm up for 3-5 minutes before beginning arthritis exercises with light activity like walking around the block or marching in place.
    • Cool down for at least 5 minutes after strengthening or cardio exercises. You can do more light activity like walking or stretching exercises.
    • When you start exercising to relieve arthritis symptoms, you may initially have some mild discomfort, but this often improves after a few minutes. Listen to your body if any initial discomfort persists – it knows what is arthritis appropriate exercise for you.

Note: If you experience severe arthritis pain during your workout, stop immediately and talk with your healthcare provider about arthritis management.

Always read and follow the label before taking any arthritis pain medication.

  • Take “sitting breaks.”

Both standing and walking put extra stress on your knee and hip joints. If you need to be on your feet for long periods, take sitting breaks. If you can, put your feet up.

    Stand mindfully.

People with a painful knee or hip joint often change the way they stand without realizing it. Over time, that can overstress other leg joints. Try to keep your feet hip-width apart when standing. Keep your weight even on both feet
  • Save high heels for special occasions.

Heels put added stress on your knees. Unfortunately, you won't feel anything until the damage is done. If you love high heels, wear them for short periods on special occasions—not every day.

    Change positions often.

When you are sitting for long periods, shift at least every 15 or 20 minutes to avoid muscle tension and joint stiffness. Major culprits: long trips, TV, and computer time.

    Consider your sleep position.

If you have arthritis in your hips, sleep on your back with your legs apart. Or if only one hip has arthritis, lie on the other side with a pillow between your knees.
  • Lift smart.

Instead of bending at the waist or hips to pick up objects from the floor, use your leg and butt muscles to lift. When carrying a heavy object, hold it close to your body.

Use the strongest joint for the job.

If you have arthritis in your fingers, push doors open with your forearm instead of your hand. Support your coffee mug with your palm. Opt for a backpack over a hand-held tote. Save weaker joints for tasks only they can accomplish.

    Use knee and elbow pads.

Whether you are kneeling in the garden or rollerblading in the park, use cushions and safety pads to protect knees and elbows from strains and injuries. Hurting a joint increases your risk for developing arthritis in it.
  • Be the smart weekend warrior.

At the end of a long workweek, it can be easy to overdo it when you are having fun. If your body isn't prepared for the weekend burst of activity, you could injure your joints. Plan ahead: Think about what your limits are and do appropriate exercise to get ready.

Reminder: Talk to your healthcare provider before making any changes in diet, exercise, or medication.

Get Pain Relief Responsibly

  • Will you need pain relievers as time goes by?

Arthritis is a progressive disease. You may need medicine in order to reduce your pain, including prescription medicines. However, if you make the effort to reduce arthritis pain and joint damage by exercising, losing excess weight, and protecting your joints, you may also reduce your need for pain relievers.

You still may need pain relief.

Even if you're successfully controlling your arthritis symptoms through exercise and other efforts, you may still want to have a pain reliever on hand. It's an important part of the arthritis-care equation.

Why TYLENOL® Makes Sense for Arthritis Pain

Facts about acetaminophen, the ingredient in TYLENOL® 8 HR Arthritis Pain
    • Proven effective for OA pain
    • Won't irritate your stomach the way aspirin or even naproxen sodium (Aleve®) can
    • Doesn't interfere with the benefits of aspirin heart therapy the way ibuprofen can
    • Safe and effective when taken as directed
No matter which pain reliever you choose, always read the label carefully and follow the dosage directions, checking active ingredients if you are taking more than one medication at a time. You should never take more than one medicine containing acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is safe to use as directed, but if you take too much, you could harm your liver.
