About Kirkland Signature Acid Controller
The active ingredient in Kirkland Signature Acid Controller Maximum Strength is Famotidine, 20 mg, an H2 Blocker. These tablets partially block production of acid in the stomach cells by inhibiting histamine, a substance that stimulates the secretion of stomach acid. Famotidine works to suppress the amount of stomach acid as well as the acid concentration. Over-the counter and prescription H2 blockers can prevent meal-induced heartburn as well as relieve the burning sensation associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach.
These acid reducers generally relieve symptoms for a longer period of time than antacids, but they take time to work initially.
Who gets heartburn?
More than 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month. Some studies suggest that more than 15 million Americans experience heartburn symptoms each day. Being pregnant or overweight can make you more likely to have heartburn.
Physicians Recommend Famotidine
Famotidine is the #1 recommended H2 blocker active ingredient for the over-the-counter (OTC) acid reducer category in the US. H2 blockers "like Famotidine" work by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach.
Plan Ahead
Don’t wait until you feel the burn. Heartburn relief begins with prevention. Take Acid Controller 10-60 minutes before eating or drinking the food and beverages that may cause indigestion. Block stomach acid production before it starts.
Understanding Heartburn
Heartburn is a painful, burning sensation in the lower chest or throat that occurs when stomach acid backs up (or 'refluxes') and irritates the sensitive lining of the esophagus.
Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter acts like a trapdoor, letting food down into the stomach, while preventing stomach acids from coming back up into the esophagus. When it becomes too relaxed, it can allow stomach acid to flow backward into the esophagus, resulting in heartburn.
Fact: Chronic, Untreated Heartburn is Uncomfortable…and Dangerous
A study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that chronic, untreated heartburn markedly increased the risk of esophageal cancer. In patients with longstanding, severe unresolved heartburn (e.g. frequent symptoms 20 years duration), the risk of developing esophageal cancer was 43.5 times as great as for those without chronic heartburn.
Fact: Eating Before Going to Bed Can Trigger Heartburn
You will probably experience the unpleasant side effects of nighttime frequent heartburn if you find yourself eating late at night. According to a survey by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), three- quarters of the respondents reported that nighttime heartburn either keeps them from falling asleep or wakes them up during sleep.
Fact: Holidays Can Be Heartburn-Free
When asked to name their worst "heartburn days of the year," those with frequent heartburn most often cited Thanksgiving (43%), followed by Christmas/Hanukkah (35%), and July 4th and New Year's Eve (both tied at 14%). When celebrating, take Acid Controller before eating to block stomach acid production before heartburn strikes.
Heartburn Tips
The following tips may help ease or prevent frequent heartburn:
- Do not lie flat or bend over after eating
- Do not wear tight-fitting clothing around the stomach
- Do not eat before bedtime
- Raise the head of your bed
- Avoid heartburn-causing foods such as rich, spicy, fatty or fried foods, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol and certain fruits and vegetables
- Eat slowly and avoid big meals
- If overweight, lose weight
- Quit smoking
When stomach acid hurts, Kirkland Acid Controller can help.
